A former Liberian militia commander known as General Butt Naked has admitted to eating children's hearts before going into battle. He said the sacrifices "included the killing of an innocent child and plucking out the heart, which was divided into pieces for us to eat." Milton Blahyi is now an evangelical preacher and has confessed his crimes to encourage others to do the same to banish their demons and "heal the country's wounds". He is also the first person to confirm rumours of human sacrifice during the 14-year conflict. Blahyi told the BBC he first became exposed to killings in 1982 when he was ordained as a traditional tribal priest at the age of 11.
He went into battle on behalf of Liberian President Samuel Doe and fought against the militia of Charles Taylor, who is currently on trial for war crimes in The Hague. "Tradition made me to believe that as a priest, coming now to be a warrior, that I made a human sacrifice before going into battle," he said. But he stopped fighting in 1996 after God appeared to him and told him he was doing Satan's work.

Around 15,000 Jews live in Rome. Of the existing 113 licenses that allow souvenir selling in Rome, 112 belong to Jewish vendors. A week ago however, the Vatican City governor, Cardinal Giovanni Lajolo, banned all traders from the Baroque Bernini columnade, upsetting the Jewish sellers who claim to have been licensed by a Pope many hundreds of years before.
